Gigabit rollout
Tele Columbus Group offers gigabit internet connection to an additional 224,000 households
- Nationwide conversion to gigabit transmission is making progress
- 1,000 Mbit/s now available to additional 224,000 households
- A total of 925,000 households have a gigabit connection
Berlin, 12 September 2022. As part of its Fiber Champion strategy, Tele Columbus AG is rolling out a gigabit connection for customers of its PŸUR group brand across its networks in Germany. Effective immediately, an extra 224,000 households will have access to an internet connection with a top speed of 1,000 Mbit/s.
The technical upgrade of the fibre optic-based cable networks to include the DOCSIS 3.1 transmission standard enables the company to offer internet products with a download speed of up to 1,000 megabits per second.
The switchover will provide customers in Chemnitz, Frankfurt (Oder), Freital, Güstrow, Hoyerswerda, Plauen and neighbouring municipalities with a gigabit internet connection.
Undiminished demand for higher bandwidths
Currently, 85 per cent of all new PYÜR customers book bandwidths of 200 Mbit/s or faster. In 2019, i.e. before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, only 50 per cent opted for a 200 or 400 Mbit/s internet connection. The continuous growth in the use of online streaming services, increasing popularity of online gaming and, of course, more people working from home are driving demand for stable, super-fast broadband connections.
By upgrading its network, Tele Columbus plans to introduce a new dimension of speed to most of the roughly 2.4 million households it provides with internet service. To date, around 925,000 of the households that PŸUR services have already had their connections upgraded to gigabit speed. From a technical point of view, some 1.3 million households are already connected to DOCSIS 3.1. networks and are benefiting from increases in available data capacity.
In the years ahead, Tele Columbus AG will be putting its full weight behind the PYÜR brand, investing EUR 2 billion in the upgrading of networks and the expansion of fibre optics so as to offer PYÜR customers access to the full potential of cable as a viable, future-proof connection to the digital world.
Special rates for fast internet connections
Customers can start surfing the web at home at lightning speeds with the additional Pure Speed 500 and Pure Speed 1.000 rates. PŸUR has put together a special offer for the gigabit market launch, with the Pure Speed 1.000 gigabit rate offered free of charge for the first six months, after which customers will only pay EUR 44 per month instead of EUR 55. The offer for six months of internet access free of charge is principally aimed at all new customers who sign up for the PŸUR gigabit-speed cable-internet package on a 24-month contract term. This means that customers who order an internet product comprising a bandwidth of 200, 500 and 1,000 Mbit/s will get six months free, and this also applies to bundles that include an additional TV package.
